Dean's Message
A lot have happened over the past weeks here at NUS Business School. We are embarking on exciting relationships with reputed organisations such as Mizuho Corporate Bank, CPA Australia and SPRING Singapore. There will be future developments in the months to come and I will be glad to announce them as we go along. We also had the pleasure of having Stanley Tan, Chairman of National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre speak to our faculty, staff and students. It was an insightful session where he shared a lot on his personal background and the cause that he fervently advocates.
Our students are also in the spotlight in this issue. Our undergraduates took home the Chancellor Shield for the third consecutive year at this year’s Rag Day, in addition to the six other shields that they swept. Two other groups made headline news as they set new Singapore records for most number of frisbees thrown in the signature Kallang Wave style and the largest national flag made from origami hearts. We even had one of our incoming students, Lo Man Yi, at the Olympics as she represents Singapore in the sailing event.
We had a very successful Commencement ceremony where we celebrated our graduates’ achievements and welcomed them as new members into the alumni family. I am happy to also share that we honoured several of our outstanding graduates at the Eminent Business Alumni Award. One of our alumni, Dr William Chung, is a recipient of The Public Service Star Award at this year’s National Day Awards. Our alumni have done exceptionally well and we are proud of their achievements.
Last but not least, we are continuing our winning streak with regard to our research as one of our accounting faculty member received the best paper in 2008 AFAANZ/IAAER Conference. This is a nice addition to the news in the last issue where Prof Duan Jin-Chuan was elected as a fellow in Academia Sinica and Assoc Prof Anand Srinivasan took the FAMA-DFA Prize among many others.
It has indeed been a busy but accomplished time for everyone. Let’s keep the news coming!

The NUS Business School has signed a Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) with Mizuho Corporate Bank Ltd
(MHCB) to establish Mizuho Scholarships and Bursaries
and other education initiatives, marking the start
of a new strategic relationship between the Japanese
bank and us. It is the Bank’s first gift to
NUS Business School , demonstrating its commitment
towards
contributing to the Singapore economy and society.
One of the first initiatives under the scope of the
MOU would be the establishment of the endowed Mizuho
Corporate Bank Scholarships and Bursaries. These scholarships
and bursaries will be awarded to talented and deserving
undergraduates who are in need of financial aid to
study at NUS Business School . The endowed nature of
the fund would mean that the School can provide the
students with Mizuho Scholarships and Bursaries year
after year in perpetuity.
Besides the setting up of scholarships and bursaries,
Mizuho Corporate Bank Ltd is also working closely with
NUS Business School to further extend its support for
up to 10 business undergraduates to have a chance to
take up internships at MHCB’s Singapore Branch
or Tokyo head office and offer recruitment opportunities
for NUS Business School graduates.
The MOU also paves the way for both organisations
to develop mutually beneficial collaborations. NUS
Business School will also invite the bank’s executives
and professionals to assume adjunct teaching or training
roles and share their industry insights and knowledge
at the School’s seminars and workshops for business
students. NUS Business School and Mizuho Corporate
Bank Ltd will also work together to undertake joint
research projects of mutual interests and concerns.
“We are proud to seal the MOU with NUS Business
School today. This will lay the foundation for an important
partnership that underlines our firm belief in the
value of quality education. With these new developments,
we hope to enhance our contribution not only to the
Singapore economy but also to Singapore society,” said
Mr Keizo Ohashi, Managing Executive Officer, Head of
Asia and Oceania, Mizuho Corporate Bank, Ltd.
Prof Bernard Yeung , Dean of NUS Business School said “NUS
Business School is delighted to have forged an alliance
with a leading Japanese bank such as the Mizuho Corporate
Bank. I’m excited about our collaborations and
look forward to developing synergies that would bring
great benefits to both our organizations and to the
Singapore economy. I’m confident that we will
build an enduring and successful partnership.”

More than 120 finance academics, researchers and
practitioners from all over the world converged at
the 2nd Singapore International Conference on Finance
on 17 and 18 July to exchange ideas and discuss the
latest developments in finance.
Together with presenters and discussants from renowned
financial institutions and universities such as the
Kellogg School of Management of Northwestern University,
the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Oxford University,
Rice University, Harvard Business School and the

participants took part in an invigorating exchange
of ideas on corporate finance, asset pricing, behavioral
finance, risk management, financial intermediation
and corporate governance.

and Department of Finance,
the Conference saw stiff competition for the presentation
of papers, with over 240 submissions from all over
the world for just 13 presentation slots.
New dean of NUS Business School, Prof Bernard Yeung
, noted in his speech that, as the world economy
re-orientates itself towards Asia and Asia’s
needs for capital and well-functioning capital markets
grow alongside its rapidly developing economies,
academic discourse at a platform such as the 2nd
international finance conference could be key to
understanding the major issues that face capital
markets.
In his keynote speech, Prof Ravi Jagannathan, Chicago
Mercantile Exchange and John F. Sander Distinguished
Professor of Finance from Northwestern University ’s
Kellogg School of Management, spoke about using the
CAPM as the model for estimating the cost of equity
capital.
As part of its aim to promote better understanding
of current topics in finance, and in particular,
to meet the increasing interest in Islamic finance
and corporate giving, the Saw Centre for Financial
Studies launched two new books – “Introduction
to Islamic Finance” and “Corporate Citizenship
in Singapore” – at the Conference.
The book “Introduction to Islamic Finance” is
a concise guide to the evolving field of Islamic
finance and its application in Singapore , delving
into the key tenets and principles of Islamic finance,
the range of products and instruments, the international
regulatory architecture and Singapore ’s approach
to developing the industry.
“Corporate Citizenship in Singapore” delves
into the underlying philosophies that influence corporate
giving decisions such as those pertaining to the
selection of recipient organizations and size of
contribution. The book is a timely and informative
resource for community relations practitioners, non-profit
leaders, social policy makers and anyone keen to
understand how Singapore’s corporate sector
has fared on the whole.

NUS Business School is one of the partners for
CPA Australia’s $750,000 scholarship programme.
The scholarship is the first of its kind to be
offered by CPA Australia world-wide. It represents
a major co-operative effort to address the skills
shortage and raise the standard of the accounting
profession in Singapore.
Over the next five years, participating employers
together with CPA Australia, will contribute to
fund over 300 accounting students in NTU, NUS and
SMU to commence the CPA Program, an internationally
recognised post-graduate education course that
teaches international knowledge of accounting standards
and ethics.
Voicing the tripartite belief, Mr Alex Malley,
President of CPA Australia, said “By giving
the brightest student the opportunity to commence
both professional qualifications and rewarding
internship opportunities before they graduate,
we are giving them a head-start on a successful
career in accounting,”
Participating employers include Deloitte Singapore,
Ernst & Young Solutions LLP, Foo Kon Tan Grant
Thornton, KPMG, LTC LLP, National Australia Bank
Ltd, Ng Lee & Associates – DFK, Phillip
Securities, PricewaterhouseCoopers, RSM Chio Lim
and ST Asset Management Ltd. The scholarship is
also endorsed by all three local universities – Nanyang
Technological University Business School, Singapore
Management University and National University of
Singapore Business School.
Speaking at the official launch, Mr Chaly Mah,
CPA Australia Singapore Division President and
Regional Manager Partner and CEO of Deloitte Asia
Pacific, referred to the role of the scholarship
in increasing the pool of accountants with professional
qualification in Singapore. “Post-graduate
programs such as that of CPA Australia teach invaluable
commercial skills and high ethical standards, which
are reinforced throughout one’s career via
the continuing professional development required
of its member,” he said. “I see the
standard of the accounting profession in Singapore
being lifted as a result of more accountants being
encouraged to pursue professional qualifications,” Mr
Mah commented.

The MBA Orientation Week kicked off to a great
start when over 200 students arrived at NUS Business
School on the morning of 29 July. Judging from
the smiles and friendly faces despite the new environment,
it was clear that the students, who come from 25
countries, were excited about this new chapter
in their lives.
Assoc Prof Susanna Leong, Vice-Dean
of Graduate Studies, welcomed everyone into the
MBA community with an inspiring speech and interesting
anecdotes. Mr Lim Yue Wen, Director of Graduate
Studies, introduced the array of MBA programmes
that are offered here. There were also briefings
by other departments which helped these freshmen
to get an all-rounded understanding of the ins
and outs of the School. O-Week ended with two days
of fun, sun and adventure at Outward Bound Singapore.
It was a time when everyone built new friendships
as they prepare for the start of school the following
week. Once again to the class of 2010, welcome

Our undergraduates made headlines over one weekend and even set two new Singapore records!
Nike+Human Race 10K
NUS won the School Team Challenge (aged 20 - 24) and a cash prize of $10,000 in the Nike+ Human Race 10K, for the most number of runners who came under 90 minutes. Even though the students came from diverse faculties, I am pleased to say that NUS Business School was the majority, representing about 70% of the team. This clearly reflects our strong spirit and unity in everything that we do and I am proud to be a part of the Business School community. A big 'thank you' to Jonathan Loh and his team from the Bizad Club who spearheaded this initiative right from the beginning. Your leadership and passion is indeed commendable.
Hearts United 2008
Our BBA student, Wang Ying Ying, is now in the Singapore Book of Records for the 'Largest National Flag Made From Origami Hearts'! She is part of Team 'Ice-Scream Love’, one of the finalists for Citibank-YMCA Youth For Causes 2008. Citibank-YMCA Youth For Causes 2008 is an initiative whereby students can get hands-on experience in both business and entrepreneurship, while serving a social cause. Ying Ying and her team raised about $10,000 for Canossaville Children's Home, through the sales of Ben & Jerry's ice cream and the origami hearts. I look forward to hearing more good news in October when the final results for this fund-raising competition is announced.
Tri-University Beach Carnival iBiza 2008
Another group of NUS Business School students made their way into the Singapore Book Of Records over at Sentosa with the most number of frisbees thrown in the signature Kallang Wave style. Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, started off with the first frisbee, followed by students from the three local universities. Saturday's event at Tanjong Beach was part of the inaugural Tri-University Beach Carnival iBiza 2008. Our student leader, Leong Wen Kang, Director of Sports in the Bizad Club and his team headed this inaugural event among the business schools of National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University and the Singapore Management University, with the hope to foster a deeper relationship between the three universities.
