Our Business School booth was once again a popular destination for visitors at the annual NUS Open House for the weekend of 14-15 March 2009. Almost 16,000 visitors packed the Multi-Purpose Halls of the Sports and Recreation Centre, with crowds starting to pour in from around 10am. Potential students who were matriculating this year, as well those who would be matriculating next year, came to find out more about the School and the courses offered.
Our Business School family put up a strong front, with almost 200 faculty members, administrative staff and student ambassadors from the BizAd Club present, over the two days, to answer queries from visitors. Student ambassadors also shared their perspectives on life in NUS Business School , and how the experiences and opportunities offered at the Business School had enriched their education holistically.
Faculty talks drew crowds too, as Multi-Purpose Hall 6 was packed for all of the 4 sessions. Dr Helen Chai, Director ( BBA programme), delivered a presentation on the BBA programme, while 2 invited students with outstanding achievements shared their experiences at each session. There was also an exciting video on the services of the Career Services Office.
The special feature for this year's Open House was the series of talks by our Dean and faculty. Prof Bernard Yeung delivered a talk titled "The Financial Crisis and Asia: the recovery and her future", while Prof Ho Yew Kee spoke on "Financial Crisis and me - what's the link?". Assoc Prof Kai-Alexander Schlevogt touched on "Strategic leadership in times of crisis". |

Our BBA(Hons) graduates' mean starting salary is close to $4000.

| ICPAS Press Conference |
| |
| A study commissioned by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore (ICPAS) and conducted by the Corporate Governance & Financial Reporting Centre of NUS Business School revealed that only 14% of members on Audit Committees (ACs) of listed companies in Singapore are formally trained in accounting and finance. The results of the study, led by Assoc Prof Ho Yew Kee, were released at a press conference on 3 March 2009 . The study looked at a total of 675 listed firms in Singapore, plus annual reports for the financial period between June 2007 and June 2008. While most companies have at least one professional accountant on their board or AC, only 46% have two or more financially-trained AC members. Dr Ernest Kan, chairman of the ICPAS corporate governance committee, said: "If the point is to enhance the whole corporate governance process, then it's important to get the right people to do the job". In response to the survey findings, the MAS , the SGX and the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority said "In appointing directors as audit committee members, companies should review and determine their directors' suitability not just based on qualifications, but also on relevant expertise, experience and character". |

| Inaugural Study Tour to the Philippines |
| |
It was the first time in NUS Business School's history that a study tour was made to the Philippines. From 23 – 27 February 2009, our MBA students went on an inaugural trip to Philippines, with the aim to discover more about the Philippine business and economic climate, and in the hope of promoting a better understanding of the country and the ASEAN region.
The visiting group consisted of full-time and part-time MBA students, as well as exchange students, with representation from a total of 9 different nationalities. Some of the highlights of the trip included visits to the Philippine Senate and to the Department of Finance, where the group of 14 MBA students met with Senator Mar Roxas and Finance Secretary Margarito Teves, as well as corporate visits to Ayala Corporation, Jollibee Foods Corporation, San Miguel Corporation, SGV & Co., SM Investments Corporation, Unilever Corporation, and Asian Development Bank. |

| Venturing into Entrepreneurship |
| |
Recently, Prof Wong Poh Kam (Director, NUS Enterprise Centre) shared his ideas on starting a Private Equity and Venture Capital (PE/VC) Club with the MBA students.
Being an industry veteran, Prof Wong spent some quality time explaining the investing process of an angel investor or a Venture Capitalist. He then focused on the role of angel networks and highlighted facts such as the Singapore government's initiatives to promote investment for innovation. |
| |
| The discussion then veered towards the NUS Seed Funding and its functioning. It was followed by an interactive session of how the MBA program could run a PE/VC interest group. There was unanimous agreement to conduct panel discussions with angel investors and venture capitalists and have regular networking sessions with the industry. In conclusion, this was the first step to set up a full fledged PE/VC club – an initiative which NUS Business School and NUS MBA programme can be proud of in future. |

| A Colourful Experience |
| |
One of the exciting advantages of being in NUS Business School is the global exposure. In this case, students gained a deeper understanding of ‘Holi', a Hindu festival also known as the Festival of Colours.
Over 35 MBA students, including those on exchange in Singapore, participated in the celebrations on 8 March 2009. There were various performances that added much vibrancy to the celebrations, not forgetting the traditional splashing of colours! A sumptuous lunch consisting of traditional Indian fare followed the revelry. |
