NUS Business School enters the second quarter of 2009 amidst a flurry of activities. Plenty of effort went into preparations for the NUS Open House 2009, which proved to be well-rewarded, judging from the huge turnout at the event. Almost 200 Business School faculty, administrative staff and student ambassadors participated in showcasing the offerings of NUS Business School to prospective students.

We also have reason to rejoice, when our MBA and EMBA students as well as faculty and staff, came together to mark our improved Financial Times rankings for 2009. Double celebrations were in order as NUS Business School achieved ranking among the top 20 business schools in the world for our Executive MBA programme, while our MBA programme rocketed to a global position of 35.

Our undergraduate programme also scored high at the recent Graduate Employment Survey 2008. Our graduates are the most sought after by employers, securing the highest overall employment rate as well as full-time permanent employment rate within 6 months after graduation.

Our student representatives and ambassadors continue to garner recognition and accolades, as they fly high the NUS Business School flag at overseas events. NUS team vCare Technologies took part in the Changmai Bangkok Business Challenge 2009 - one of Thailand's most prestigious business-plan competitions - and was awarded more than US$2000 in cash prizes. MBA student representatives also participated, as one of the 12 finalist teams, in the Thammasat Asia Moot Corp 09, an exclusive Business Plan competition organised by the Thammasat University, and came away much enriched by the experience.

On the alumni front, we are continuing active engagement with our graduates and we know that even more fruitful partnerships will blossom in the months to come.

Let's continue our wonderful work together as a community.

Prof Tan Eng Chye (far left), Provost of NUS, and Prof Tan Chorh Chuan (2nd from left), President of NUS, getting a quick tour of the NUS Business School booth from Dr Helen Chai, Asst Dean of Undergraduate Studies.

Our Business School booth was once again a popular destination for visitors at the annual NUS Open House for the weekend of 14-15 March 2009. Almost 16,000 visitors packed the Multi-Purpose Halls of the Sports and Recreation Centre, with crowds starting to pour in from around 10am. Potential students who were matriculating this year, as well those who would be matriculating next year, came to find out more about the School and the courses offered.

Our Business School family put up a strong front, with almost 200 faculty members, administrative staff and student ambassadors from the BizAd Club present, over the two days, to answer queries from visitors. Student ambassadors also shared their perspectives on life in NUS Business School , and how the experiences and opportunities offered at the Business School had enriched their education holistically.

Faculty talks drew crowds too, as Multi-Purpose Hall 6 was packed for all of the 4 sessions. Dr Helen Chai, Director ( BBA programme), delivered a presentation on the BBA programme, while 2 invited students with outstanding achievements shared their experiences at each session. There was also an exciting video on the services of the Career Services Office.

The special feature for this year's Open House was the series of talks by our Dean and faculty. Prof Bernard Yeung delivered a talk titled "The Financial Crisis and Asia: the recovery and her future", while Prof Ho Yew Kee spoke on "Financial Crisis and me - what's the link?". Assoc Prof Kai-Alexander Schlevogt touched on "Strategic leadership in times of crisis".

NUS Business Graduates Surge Ahead in Securing Employment Despite Tough Times

Despite the tough job climate, NUS business graduates are the most desired by employers, securing the highest overall employment rate as well as full-time permanent employment rate (as opposed to contract or temporary employment) within 6 months after graduation.

According to the 2008 Graduate Employment Survey data released by the Ministry of Education, NUS BBA(Hons) graduates also led the pack of Singapore business graduates in earning the highest starting salary, by topping all categories under the Gross Monthly Salary, ie. the mean salary, media salary, 25 th and 75 th percentiles. Our BBA(Hons) graduates' mean starting salary is close to $4000.

ICPAS Press Conference

A study commissioned by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore (ICPAS) and conducted by the Corporate Governance & Financial Reporting Centre of NUS Business School revealed that only 14% of members on Audit Committees (ACs) of listed companies in Singapore are formally trained in accounting and finance. The results of the study, led by Assoc Prof Ho Yew Kee, were released at a press conference on 3 March 2009 . The study looked at a total of 675 listed firms in Singapore, plus annual reports for the financial period between June 2007 and June 2008. While most companies have at least one professional accountant on their board or AC, only 46% have two or more financially-trained AC members. Dr Ernest Kan, chairman of the ICPAS corporate governance committee, said: "If the point is to enhance the whole corporate governance process, then it's important to get the right people to do the job". In response to the survey findings, the MAS , the SGX and the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority said "In appointing directors as audit committee members, companies should review and determine their directors' suitability not just based on qualifications, but also on relevant expertise, experience and character".

Inaugural Study Tour to the Philippines

It was the first time in NUS Business School's history that a study tour was made to the Philippines.  From 23 – 27 February 2009, our MBA students went on an inaugural trip to Philippines, with the aim to discover more about the Philippine business and economic climate, and in the hope of promoting a better understanding of the country and the ASEAN region.

The visiting group consisted of full-time and part-time MBA students, as well as exchange students, with representation from a total of 9 different nationalities. Some of the highlights of the trip included visits to the Philippine Senate and to the Department of Finance, where the group of 14 MBA students met with Senator Mar Roxas and Finance Secretary Margarito Teves, as well as corporate visits to Ayala Corporation, Jollibee Foods Corporation, San Miguel Corporation, SGV & Co., SM Investments Corporation, Unilever Corporation, and Asian Development Bank.

Venturing into Entrepreneurship

Recently, Prof Wong Poh Kam (Director, NUS Enterprise Centre) shared his ideas on starting a Private Equity and Venture Capital (PE/VC) Club with the MBA students.

Being an industry veteran, Prof Wong spent some quality time explaining the investing process of an angel investor or a Venture Capitalist. He then focused on the role of angel networks and highlighted facts such as the Singapore government's initiatives to promote investment for innovation.

The discussion then veered towards the NUS Seed Funding and its functioning. It was followed by an interactive session of how the MBA program could run a PE/VC interest group. There was unanimous agreement to conduct panel discussions with angel investors and venture capitalists and have regular networking sessions with the industry. In conclusion, this was the first step to set up a full fledged PE/VC club – an initiative which NUS Business School and NUS MBA programme can be proud of in future.

A Colourful Experience

One of the exciting advantages of being in NUS Business School is the global exposure. In this case, students gained a deeper understanding of ‘Holi', a Hindu festival also known as the Festival of Colours.

Over 35 MBA students, including those on exchange in Singapore, participated in the celebrations on 8 March 2009. There were various performances that added much vibrancy to the celebrations, not forgetting the traditional splashing of colours! A sumptuous lunch consisting of traditional Indian fare followed the revelry.

Our MBA students are all set for a fun-filled time just before the splashing begins.
