The past month was a significant month, with the appointment of our new Management Advisory Board, consisting of individuals who bring with them a great wealth of experience from the industry. We trust and know for certain that they will bring us forward to new accomplishments.

Meanwhile we have not been lax in securing greater exposure for the School. We have set up the Center for Asset Management Research & Investments (CAMRI) to facilitate study in asset management, as well as tied up with external partners to organise further conferences and partake in international projects. I also have the privilege of being appointed as a member of the Economic Strategies Committee.

Internally, there has been new faculty appointments and change of duties, with Assoc Prof Hum Sin Hoon being appointed as the Vice-Dean of Undergraduate Studies, taking over the helms from Assoc Prof Quek Ser Aik. Congratulations also, to staff on winning the 'Best Practical Implications' and 'Best Theoretical Paper' awards, and those whose work have been recognised by their MBA students for the 'Best Lecturer' and 'Best Service' awards.

Students and alumni have been busy too, welcoming freshmen, hosting more Norwegian exchange students, and raising money for charity. Indeed, such vigour and energy is what NUS Business School needs to stay ahead of the pack. A job well done!

Center for Asset Management Research & Investments

The Center for Asset Management Research & Investments (CAMRI) is a recent initiative that will focus on education, training and research in various aspects of asset management:

Quantitative, behavioural and fundamental analyses
Asset pricing models
Risk management
Asset allocation
Performance evaluations.

Led by Prof Joe Cherian, who joined NUS Business School this past March after a 17-year career in finance at U.S. academic institutions and Wall Street, CAMRI aims to better prepare our finance students for the industry and to cement a closer relationship between our school and the financial industry.

Recently, two student teams (one MBA and one BBA team) were involved in asset management-related Student Consulting Practicum projects, analysing a real-world investment management problem for a large sovereign wealth fund. As a result of our students' stellar performance in the written and oral presentations, there are many other new and follow-up projects in the pipeline. An Investment Management & Trading Lab will be set up at the new Mochtar Riady building by mid-2010, which will involve the design of a new trading floor with the relevant financial services data, software and hardware.

Various activities such as public talks by NUS faculty and well-recognized global scholars have already been lined up. In November, there will be a half-day forum on investment management theory and practice. The inaugural Annual Asian MBA Stock Pitch Competition (SPC) will be held from March 3 - 5, 2010 here at the Business School, and is fully-funded by several leading private institutions in the financial sector. For more information, please visit the SPC website.

Freshmen Orientation Camp 2009

NUS Business Camp was held from 22 – 25 June with the theme The Time Chronicles, where freshmen transcended different eras during each day of the camp. They were given the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the campus, running around under the hot sun and playing water games in Sentosa. During the finale night, cameras were flashing non-stop at the creative costumes as everyone turned up dressed as pirates or sailors. It was great fun for the freshmen and a good opportunity for them to network and mingle with their seniors, even before the term starts.
