The past month has been another hectic and fulfilling period for all of us at NUS Business School. Gathering the top minds of the business world was foremost on our tasklist as we put together a few platforms for the exploration and exchange of creative industry ideas.

We played host to the Association of Asia Pacific Business Schools (AAPBS) 4th Annual Workshop, and lent a hand in making the 8th Annual Darden International Finance Conference a huge success.

While we welcomed prospective students to our campus, existing BBA students and alumni proved their mettle by scoring wins both in the national and international arena, showcasing their creativity and perseverance.

Congratulations as well, to faculty staff who have been named for the Annual Teaching Excellence and Singapore Medical Journal Recognition awards, and to Professor Sheila Wang from Department of Decision Sciences for becoming a member of the School Sub-Committee under the National Integration Council.

Our staff and students have indeed made us proud and let us continue to strive for success!

This conference was jointly organized by University of Virginia's Darden School of Business and the Saw Centre for Financial Studies at NUS Business School, in partnership with State Street Global Markets, the Research Foundation of the CFA Institute, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Professor Chang, a Provost's Chair Professor at NUS Business School , spoke to 150 CEOs, leaders and senior managers from various industries. He shared his knowledge on globalization strategies in an Asian context, based on his book “Sony vs Samsung: The Inside Story of the Electronics Giants' Battle for Global Supremacy”. The book was voted among the top three best business books in 2008 by ‘strategy+business', a Boston Consulting Group publication.

During his talk, Professor Chang discussed the divergent fortunes of the two electronics giants and the major decisions, processes and corporate behaviour that contributed to the rise of one and the decline of the other. Professor Chang also provided insights into areas such as business and marketing strategies, problems, opportunities, leadership issues, investments, globalization strategies, future challenges, and lessons that could be learnt from the two companies.

The talk was the first of a series of breakfast talks aimed at bringing relevant business knowledge to business professionals and engaging the senior business community.

Inspired by the famous Chinese fable, "The Journey to the West" and tracing the lead character Monk Xuanzang's pilgrimage, the 110-km trek across the Mo-Kia-Yen Gobi Desert was a test of endurance amid networking opportunities.

One of the participants, Sophia Luan Jianghong, our APEX-C 12 alumni, started a donation drive amongst alumni, friends and colleagues to set up the Across Gobi - Charity Hiking Foundation.
