| EQUIS Team visits NUS Business School |
| |
NUS Business School hosted the team from EQUIS, from 7 - 9 April 2009. The Peer Review team, comprising 4 members, was here to conduct a formal on-site assessment of the School as part of the accreditation process, following the submission of the self-assessment report on 24 February 2009.
This is the final stage of our EQUIS applications process and we look forward to receiving their recommendation report soon.

| Mizuho Scholarship and Bursary Cheque Presentation and Donor Appreciation Ceremony |

Held on 29 April 2009 at Nexus, University Hall, the Mizuho scholarship and bursary cheque presentation and donor appreciation ceremony was to mark a milestone in the collaboration between NUS Business School and Mizuho Corporate Bank.
Organised over a delectable spread of Asian fare, the event was well attended by guests from both organizations. Prof Bernard Yeung, Dean and Stephen Riady Distinguished Professor of NUS Business School gave a welcome speech that highlighted the strengthening of our strategic partnership as well as how both sides will benefit from this collaboration. Mr Kosuke Nakamura, Executive Officer and General Manager of Mizuho Corporate Bank Ltd, Singapore Branch also gave a speech on the bank's commitment to giving and the possibilities that could happen between two top institutions. He went on to present a cheque to NUS Business School after the speech. The day concluded with an exclusive tour of the School after the ceremony.

We had the opportunity to organise an executive MBA segment for the Norwegian School of Economics & Business Administration (NNH), from 20 - 24 April 2009.
Over 25 participants - including Professor William Brochs-Haukedal, Dean of NNH and Mr Tor Øyvind Baardsen, Programme Director - got the experience of participating in a customised programme where they received insights from modules that focused on Asia-Pacific. Prof Nitin Pangarkar, Academic Director of the NUS MBA, Prof Chang Sea-Jin, Assoc Prof Audrey Chia and Assoc Prof Ang Swee Hoon were on hand to teach our participants. The group also visited Singtel and joined our Asia-Pacific Executive MBA Intake 17 segment for a good time of networking. |

| Professor Richard Arvey Speaks at HR Congress |

As part of our outreach to HR leaders and professionals, the Office of Executive Education invited Prof Richard Arvey, Head of Department for Management & Organisation, to be a keynote speaker at the HR Congress held on 14 and 15 April 2009. |
|
| |
As part of the two-day HR Congress organised by the Singapore Human Resources Institute for HR leaders and professionals, Prof Arvey delivered a well-received keynote address entitled Risky Business with Risky People'. He spoke on the various risks, the people decisions, and the associated problems that CEOs, HR leaders and professionals regularly encounter within their organisations. Participants also benefitted from a discussion on models for achieving better outcomes against the risks undertaken a timely topic given the current economic uncertainty and human capital management challenges faced by organisations.
The Office of Executive Education's booth at the event was also well patronised by HR leaders who were keen to find out more about our Executive Education programmes.

Faculty Achievements at University Awards 2009 |

Congratulations to Assoc Prof Melvyn Sim from Department of Decision Sciences for winning the Young Researcher Award 2009. The award was announced at the NUS Research Awards on 24 April 2009.
Assoc Prof Melvyn Sim joined the Department of Decision Science in 2000 under the NUS Overseas Graduate Scholarship to pursue his PhD in Operations Research at MIT in which he graduated in four years. At NUS Business School, his remarkable research productivity was recognised by international academic luminaries from top tier schools, and was thus awarded early tenure in July 2008.
He was also the recipient of the Department and Faculty Outstanding Researcher Award in 2005 and 2007 respectively. |

At the same event, we also saw two of our faculty - Prof Kulwant Singh and Assoc Prof Jochen Wirtz - being inducted as members of the NUS Teaching Academy. They will join 16 other Fellows of the Academy to spearhead efforts in promoting excellence in teaching and learning at NUS, and provide leadership in educational initiatives.
The establishment of the NUS Teaching Academy was announced during the University Awards 2009 ceremony. Comprising past winners of the University's Outstanding Educator Award as well as elected faculty who have contributed significantly to education in NUS, the Academy is envisaged to be a "think-tank" in education matters. |

| Cerebration 2009 A Resounding Success |

After a year of preparation, it was time for the finals of Cerebration 2009. Held on 11 March 2009 at the Kent Ridge Guild House, it was an afternoon where the best MBA students from around the world battled it out for victory.
Our panel of judges included Mr Akhter Mateen, Vice President Finance at Unilever Asia Pte. Ltd responsible for South East Asia and Australia, Mr Gay Chee Cheong, Chairman of Radcliffe Invertron Pte Ltd, Dr Lily Chan, Chief Executive Officer of NUS Enterprise, Ms. Lisa Watson, Chairman of Direct Marketing Association of Singapore, Mr Pratap Nambair, Founder and CEO of Thought Perfect Pte Ltd, as well as the case sponsors. The winning team was from NYU Stern School of Business. |

| Honourable Mention Award at HKUST IBP Competition |
| |
Our MBA team, Jagdish Gupta and Adarsh Abhineet, represented NUS Business School at the HKUST International Business Plan Competition and received the "Honourable Mention" award for making to the top five list.
Held at the HKUST Business School from 2 - 5 April 2009, the competition attracted 80 entries from universities all over tshe world, out of which 12 teams were finally selected to present at Hong Kong Business School.
In addition to a plaque, our MBA students also took home USD1,000 in prize money. |

| BBA Consulting Practicum: Experiencing The Real World |

As part of the curriculum, our students have the option of taking on an Honours Year project in the form of a consulting practicum.
|

Four third-year Business students - Jonathan Ho, Andy Neo, Shirlene Foo and Henri Saputra embarked on their consulting practicum with Corporate Connect B.V., a financial advisory boutique that specialises in capital markets advisory and corporate finance activities. For their consulting project, the team was tasked with compiling a feasibility report that analysed the investment opportunities in the renewable energy markets of Asian countries.
Given only four months to produce the report, the team had to rise up to the challenges faced by learning to be strategic and professional in formulating real-world value-added solutions for their client. Their supervising professor was Dr Marleen Dieleman from Department of Business Policy.

| Two-time champions at USC Marshall Case Competition |
| |
Our BBA students were champions once again at the University of Southern California Marshall Real Estate Case Competition 2009.
Participants at this year's competition took on the role of investment advisors and decided if a given property fund was worth investing. The team, comprising Chong Kang Wei, Visayon Viravong and Wu Junhan as well as 3 undergraduates from School of Design and Environment, scored top marks with their concise and professional presentations.
Their faculty advisor, Dr Kwame Addae-Dapaah, also mentored our champion team last year. |

The last instalment of the Robert Walters - NUSBSA CEO Breakfast Talk was held on 24 April 2009 at Swissotel Stamford. The speaker for the day was Mr Eu Pui Sun, Managing Director of Senoko Energy Supply Pte Ltd.
Mr Eu illustrated the reality of climate change and explored issues of how a utility engineer in the electricity industry responds to changing business practices. He also shared that his views on how everyone could rise above global challenges as the responsibility of handling climate change does not just rest on the shoulders of big corporations, but it also begins with the individual. |

| NUS East China Alumni Association Golf Club Founded in Shanghai |

| Our alumni enjoyed a round of golf and the company of fellow alumni. |

On 28 March 2009, NUS East China Alumni Association Golf Club was officially founded in Shanghai. Proposed by Mr Yang Zhen Bu (APEXC 1999), Chairman of NUS East China Alumni Association and President of Shanghai Troop Industries Pte. Ltd., the Club was set up and organised by Mr Chen Qing Liang (APEXC 2007), Managing Partner of Village Earth Consulting, Mr Yu Guo Dong (IMBA 2003 graduate), Director of Shantian Resources Holding Co., Ltd. and other volunteers.

| That day, 21 alumni and their families gathered at Captain Golf Club in Pudong, Shanghai, to play and share their passion for golf. Later in the evening, Mr Yang hosted a dinner where members also had the opportunity to contribute proposals on making the club the most preferred social club in the East China Association.

The visit culminated with the signing of the Letter of Intent between Mr Long He, Deputy Director General of Jiangyou Education & Sports Bureau, and Mr Zeng Yuan Ming (APEXC 2006), Vice General Manager of Guangzhou Edge Motion Investment Co. Ltd. and the representative for all NUS alumni in China.
This initiative represents the educational contribution of the NUS alumni to the Sichuan earthquake disaster area. Over RMB700,000 have been raised and completion date and ceremony are scheduled in September 2009. |
