Welcoming the Inaugural Batch of the Master in Public Administration and Management Programme

The inaugural batch of the Master in Public Administration and Management Programme at the steps of the new Mochtar Riady Building

6 Mar marked a significant milestone for the School. Together with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP), the Master in Public Administration and Management (MPAM) programme welcomed its inaugural batch of 57 students. There was a warm welcome at the atrium where students were greeted by both the School and LKYSPP faculty and staff. Having picked up their goodie bags, they changed into the jackets that were specially made for them – hues of navy blue and red with an embossed NUS badge in front and a personalised “Master in Public Administration and Management” at the back. The bright orange goodie bags also contained personalised water tumblers and other NUS memorabilia to kick start their 10-month candidature here. Once seated in the room, the welcome ceremony started with a video of both schools.

NUS Business School Dean Bernard Yeung delivered a speech in Mandarin, followed by a short three point speech delivered in English by LKYSPP Vice-Dean Scott Fritzen. The programme directors from both schools, Prof Brian Hwarng and Prof Chen Kang, also laid down the ground rules for the students, reminding them to treat each other as equals and to observe the rules and regulations of the university. The initiation ceremony stirred up excitement amongst the students as they proudly stood in straight rows in front of the faculty, waiting for the lapel pins to be fixed to their new jackets, officiating them as students of the programme. The day wrapped up with a few group photos, a campus tour and lunch before the weary but excited students headed back to their College Green residence.

In Conversation with Three Inspirational Speakers

Ms Le Ly Hayslip (sixth from left) with a group of enthusiastic students.

In Mar, three speakers were specially invited by the Centre for Social Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy to share their inspirational journeys and stories of helping people in Vietnam.

On 3 Mar, Ms Le Ly Hayslip, President and Founder of Global Village Foundation, spoke about her community development efforts in Vietnam, through the two humanitarian organisations that she founded. The East Meets West Foundation, which she founded in 1988, aims to heal the wounds of war by bringing the US veterans of the Vietnam War back to rebuild Vietnam and help the Vietnamese people.

In 1999, Ms Le Ly founded the Global Village Foundation, which focuses on sustainable community development projects emphasizing education and peace-building at the grassroots level in Vietnam.

On 10 Mar, Ms Sue Long and Ms Doan Thi Kin Hong from the Lifestart Foundation took centrestage. This charity works in Hoi An, Vietnam, and the surrounding areas, helping children with educational scholarships and young adults with skills training programmes. The charity also helps a group of physically disabled women attain financial independence through the production of handicrafts.

All these speakers were truly inspirational. Despite the hardships and sacrifices that they had to make, the passion that they have for helping people could be felt strongly when they spoke. Audiences were touched by their stories and were curious to find out how they ccould get personally involved in these programmes.

Innovation Honeymoon

The latest book – The Innovation Honeymoon (Pearson Prentice Hall, ISBN: 978-981-06-8183-8), by Assoc Prof Kai-Alexander Schlevogt (D.Phil. Oxford), from the Department of Strategy & Policy, provides a strong conceptual foundation and practical guidelines that enable organisations to maximise innovation. The creative insights of new employees are a valuable and inexpensive source of innovative breakthroughs.

But many leaders try to eradicate the distinctiveness of recruits as early as possible, in order to assimilate them to the organisation. Some employers spend great efforts on "exit interviews", hearing about complaints when it is too late. In contrast, Innovation Honeymoon™ management helps leaders to systematically capitalise on the ideas of newcomers and create sustainable competitive advantages based on global thought leadership.

BBA Students Scores at International Competitions

Scotiabank International Case Competition

From left: Dr Sai Yayavaram, Vincent Low Kah Kee, Chan Fun Ruey, Meghna Kiran Desai and Jonathan Ong Hock Choon

Missing luggage, crashing computer, and tough competitors – these are just some of the hurdles four BBA students faced at the Scotiabank International Case Competition. Despite that, Low Kah Kee, Chan Fun Ruey, Meghna Desai and Ong Hock Choon Jonathan emerged victorious and was named champion. The last time the School won the competition was in 2001.

Besides facing last year winner – Thammasat University, and other strong competitors in the first round, the team had one of the toughest cases in the recent history for this competition. The case on General Motors tested a variety of elements from marketing, finance, operations as well as in depth business strategy. As no Internet or external research sources are allowed during the competition, the team had to rely on their existing knowledge and utilise their strong analytical skills. For the finals, teams had to face 14 judges. The judges were all top level managers of major Canadian companies including Ms Sylvia Chrominska, Group Head, Global Human Resources and Communications, Scotiabank Group and Mr John Kelleher, President of R. J. McCarthy, Canada's biggest uniform retailer.

The judges felt that the team had a deep understanding of the case and truly understood the strategic intent of GM as a company. They were also impressed by the team's confidence during the Q&A session and presentation. Mr Kelleher mentioned that the team came up with financial figures that were close to his own estimates. Dr Sai Yayavaram, from the Department of Strategy & Policy, was the team mentor.

Venture Capital Investment Competition (Asian region) Champion

Five MBA students - Yeung Chia Li, Alex Freberg, Shaswat Dhakal, Arthur Leung and Jayson Huang Chung-En - have been crowned the Champion for Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC), Asian region 2010 on 27 Feb at Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad, India.

Unlike business plan competitions in which participants pitch their own ideas to investors, at VCIC the participants play the role of an investor, seeking to identify firms with potential to generate high commercial returns at an early stage. Real entrepreneurs pitch their business plans to these participants. After evaluating the plans, it's the participants' turn to pitch to the judges.

The team impressed the judges with their thorough assessment of the risk, robust knowledge of the VC process and excellent presentation and teamwork. They will now proceed to compete with eight other winning teams from top MBA Programs in the world at the International Finals, which will be held in April 2010 at Kenan – Flagler Business School, University of North Carolina.

Navigating away from red oceans: Shipping CEOs sharing
their views

Mr Sean Lee sharing his story

On 4 and 5 Mar, two shipping CEOs held guest lectures in the strategy classes at NUS Business School. Bulk trade constitutes an important industry for Singapore, but it is a highly competitive and volatile industry. Mr Sean Lee, CEO of Singapore-listed shipping firm Marco Polo Marine Ltd, shared with MBA and BBA students how he started his career in mining and subsequently became involved in the regional shipping trade, mainly between Indonesia and Singapore. He explained how rigorous cost control in all aspects of the business and persistence in approaching customers were among the key success factors in his career.

Mr Abel van Staveren, CEO of the tanker division of the Jebson Group from Norway, also shared the strategy of his company, which had opted for a typical differentiation strategy, operating in profitable niches within the bulk shipping segment using unique, specialised ships. Like many other shipping firms, both companies were ultimately owned by families, and the speakers elaborated on the unique aspects of family-run businesses, including their long-term time horizons and the effects of generational changes in leadership.

Holi Celebration

Celebrating Holi, the festival of colours

NUS Business School has always had a history of celebrating cultural festivals with amidst great excitement and enjoyment. Holi, the Indian festival of colors was no exception. Mihir Mohite started the event by sharing the history of this festival and the celebration. Then MBA Students, Rahul Gupta and Kapil Shukla shook their legs to the very funny lyrics of “Padosan Teri Murgi”. One must say that these two are becoming quite a dancing pair. They were then joined by Neha Singla and Geetali Kumar as they performed to a medley of Holi Songs.

After the performance it was time for the event everyone waited for. There were colors of every kind, some of which took days to come off. Everyone joyously immersed themselves in the celebrations and got painted in red, green, blue, pink and what not by their batchmates.

No Indian celebration is complete without good food. And it was delicious as they ravenously gorged upon the Indian delicacies.

All in all, it was a very memorable event made even more special by the enthusiastic participation of batchmates from other countries as well.

NUS MBA Alumni Share a Day in their Work Life

NUS MBA President, Gaurav Kundarap (left) presenting the token to Chinmay Mhaskar

For most students looking into a career in Marketing, one obvious track to follow is product or brand management. However, many students are not really aware of what this kind of career path really entails – especially for those MBA students whose prior experience are from a non-corporate background such as engineering, law, or IT. Thus, the NUS MBA Marketing Club sought to fill in this gap through a sharing session called “A Day in the Life of a Brand Manager” held last 13 March 2010.

Two NUS MBA alumni, Shilpa Marodia and Chinmay Mhaskar, graciously donated their time in an effort to pass along their knowledge and experiences to the current students who were all considering a potential career in product/brand management, particularly in the FMCG sector.

More than anything else, the talk gave the students a practical, down-to-earth perspective of what this kind of job really was about: the skills required to succeed in this field, the day-to-day tasks involved – essentially giving the students a glimpse of what it is truly like beneath all the glitz and glamour that most people tend to associate with brand management, and allowing them to better evaluate if this was the right kind of job for themselves.
