Mochtar Riady Building Wins BCA Green Mark (Gold) Award

mochtar riady
The five-storey atrium lets natural lighting into the building and it also serves as a
focal point to the building.

NUS Business School’s new premise, the Mochtar Riady Building, has been awarded the BCA Green Mark Gold Award by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), at the BCA Awards 2010 held on Wednesday, 26 May. The award was made in recognition of the design and construction efforts made to promote environmental sustainability.

The building is designed for energy efficiency as well as water efficiency. Its double glazed low e-glass façade allows for sufficient daylight transmission without excessive heat gain, and in the process, reduces the amount of cooling energy needed.

Motion sensors are used in indoor spaces to control electric lighting; lights are turned off when no motion is detected for some time, thus saving on substantial amounts of energy. With photo-sensor lighting, the light-sensitive sensors turn on or off according to the ambient lighting levels.

Furthermore, the new building uses water-efficient fittings which are given three ticks (√) – the highest rating for water fittings based on PUB’s Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme. It also utilises a sub-metering and leak detection system which controls and monitors water usage. The estimated energy savings for the new premise is 395,000 kWh/yr and the estimated water savings is 18,375m3/yr.

CAMRI Inter-Semester Applied Financial Seminar Series

The first Inter-Semester Applied Financial Seminar with Mr Robert Lewis

Small cap indices have neither materially outperformed or underperformed big caps over the past 5 years. During the same period, select small cap investors have been successful in materially outperforming the market. Mr Robert Lewis CFA, Managing Director of Novatera Capital, was the guest speaker at the first Inter-Semester Applied Financial Seminar Series organised by the Center for Asset Management Research & Investments (CAMRI) on May 18. His talk, "Small Cap Investing Fundamentals: The Asian Experience", focused on how bottom-up fundamental investment techniques are tools that all investors should possess and are particularly well suited for the challenges specific to small cap investing. Mr Lewis introduced participants to various investment narratives driven by changes in income statement and balance sheet behaviour and the importance of using primary research to validate the investment narrative. Participants were also engaged in a discussion of valuation techniques in the context of small cap investing. At Novatera, Mr Lewis is the investment manager of the Hidden Jewels Fund, a long short hedge fund focused on smaller companies in Asia.

The session, held at the CAMRI Investment Management & Trading Lab, was fully booked with participants eager to find out more on small cap investing. Assistant Professor William Koh from the Department of Management & Organisation, recently released his latest book, The Top Toast – Ya Kun and the Singapore Breakfast Tradition (Cengage Learning, ISBN 978-981-428-165-2). The Top Toast focuses on Ya Kun International, famous for its aromatic black coffee and kaya (coconut-and-egg jam). It looks at how Mr Adrin Loi, Executive Chairman of Ya Kun International, took his father’s business from a street corner coffee stall, and turned it into a household name in Singapore.

This book gives readers an insight into Mr Loi’s leadership motivation and drive, and his passion to grow the company. It also looks at the importance of human resource management in growing a company, and having the right organisational structure and culture to support business growth. The book also examines the strategic choices that confront a small business. Unlike an MNC that can compete in any market by selling the same product, Ya Kun has to choose its products carefully, select it battlefield with wisdom and grow strategically.

Champions at the Peak Time Worldwide Competition

(From left) Lai Wai Kit, Ooi Tong Wei, Ritchie Goenawan and Lock Hui Min
Within a short span of four months, the BBA students have bagged top prizes in numerous case competitions all over the world. And the latest win was at the Peak Time Worldwide Competition for Business Students. Team Greenatics, consisting of Lock Hui Min, Ooi Tong Wei, Lai Wai Kit and Ritchie Goenawan, have emerged champions, despite having to deal with the travel disruption from the volcanic ash as well as juggle their studies for their exams.

Held on 1 May, Peak Time is the largest international business student competition in Europe. There were more than 300 applications from schools across the globe, and only the top 20 are chosen to fly to Riga, Latvia for the final stage. Some of the judges include Mr R Ian Davis, Executive Coach & Leadership Consultant at Lee Hecht Harrison, Mr Joakim Helenius, Chairman and CEO of Trigon Capital and Chris Church, Co-director of consultancy CEA.

This competition requires application of theoretical knowledge and analytical skills to compete in the computer-aided business simulation CESIM and solve real business problems. For this round, using CESIM, Team Greenatics had to operate a hotel chain and competed against others for the highest cumulative market share. It was a dynamic simulation; every decision taken by the team will have an impact on other teams. The teams were also given a business strategy case which was sponsored by McKinsey. Their performance in both CESIM simulation and the case study was used to pick the top 20 teams.

At Latvia, Team Greenatics competed with four other teams within the same region. They managed to beat teams from China that are well-trained in CESIM and other Singaporean teams like SMU to move into the finals. Other competitors include teams from Oxford and Copenhagen Business School. At the finals, Team Greenatics acted as consultants for a Latvian Bank and impressed the judges with their comprehensive analysis of the business case and their astute recommendations.

To capture the Diesel’s brand essence, oTeam Modish used fire as their central theme. At the presentation, they wowed the judges with a magic fire trick together with their exciting concepts and flawless presentation. The judges include Mr Christopher Neo, Managing Director, L'Oréal Singapore, Ms Isabelle Svartstein-Bourjade, General Manager, Luxury Products Division, L'Oréal Singapore, Mr Nicolas Pauthier, Human Resource Director, L'Oréal Singapore & Asean, Mr Alex Lim, Creative Director, Publicis Singapore and Ms Deborah Tan, Editor, CLEO Magazine. NUS MBA Social Impact Club Visit to the Philippines

MBA Students posing with the colourful hats provided by the villagers of the GK
Espiritu Santo

With support from the NUS Centre for Social Entrepreneurship and Philanthrophy, six NUS MBA students and two MBA exchange students visited five organisations in Manila from 4 May to 9 May and explored social issues in Philippines.

They saw how different organisations – Unilever, United Laboratories, Gawad Kalinga, World Bank and Asian Development Bank worked individually but yet are collectively striving towards eradicating poverty in Philippines. The trip opened the eyes of the MBA students on Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) activities and how companies formulate their CSR plans.

One of the key takeaways that they had was how collaborative these companies were. Unilever explained to the team how they are working with other companies to collect back plastic sachets and used packaging from consumers, regardless of which company the product packaging was from. The team also learnt about an NGO which was formed by companies to coordinate and work together on CSR Projects in Philippines.

The meetings the students had with Gawad Kalinga (GK), an International NGO, also gave them an insight into social entrepreneurship. Prior to the trip, the team researched and put their business skills into good use by putting together a presentation on how GK can expand their social entrepreneurship initiative into Singapore. At Manila, they made their presentation and had an interesting discussion on social entrepreneurship. During their visits, they also saw firsthand how direct selling of Human Heart Nature products by a GK affiliated company provided livelihood opportunities and income for the GK villages. The highlight for the trip was the one night stay with a host family. Students have the opportunity to experience the simple yet peaceful life of the slum dwellers.

Another aspect gained from the trip was the bigger picture provided by the World Bank and Asian Development bank. The team saw how the bank worked with the various governments of developing countries to cascade resources down to help the poor in a systematic, sustainable and comprehensive manner. These organisations too, placed importance on building and strengthening more public and private partnerships.

In all, this trip complemented the students’ academic learnings at the NUS Business School. Each of them saw for themselves how collaborative efforts outweigh competition and how business disciplines such as entrepreneurship and innovation operate in profit and non profit organisations.

MBA Sports Day

Participants at the first ever MBA Sports Days showing their fun and competitive spirit

On 3 April, the Sports Club organised the NUS MBA’s first-ever Sports Day. The event was held at the NUS Track and Field and had 32 participants, which consisted of MBA students, families and friends, compete in a series of fun-filled sports activities and games.

The event officially started with a Frisbee game where teams had to throw a Frisbee as far as they can with fellow team members trying to catch it. Coincidentally, the rain made the game more challenging yet all teams battled on showing their desire to compete and win.

What followed suit was another team game called Marshmallow Towers. Here, teams had to build the tallest possible tower within a given time period using sticks and marshmallows only.

The MBA students therefore drew upon their ingenuity and creativity while controlling their urge to eat those white fluffy marshmallows. After a short break, participants then took part in another activity called Water Balloon where they had to throw and catch water balloons from various distances. Fortunately, most participants got soaked in the process, which made the game all the more fun and funny. Afterwards, teams participated in the Amazing Race - the highlight of the Sports Day. Basically, participants had to do a series of tasks such as fill a bucket with water using their hands, mouth and shoes; eat wasabi-flavored peas; show off their football skills, and dash towards the finish line. To cap off the Sports Day, the event’s last activity was an M&M’s Relay where teams had to race around an obstacle course while balancing M&M’s on a plastic spoon. In the end, most participants went home with prizes. More importantly, the MBA students got a chance to know their fellow classmates better. For once, they got to work together without having to care about grades but only about fun and friendship.

MBA Study Trip to China

Getting an insight into doing business in China through the MBA Study Trip 2010

Over the course of a week, 11 MBA students embarked on a study trip to China. Organised by Huang Jingjing, the trip involved meeting corporations to get an insight into the inner workings of large corporations in China. They visited three companies – Tencent Inc China's largest and most used Internet service portal, Nokia China and Ansaldo STS, a leading technology company operating in the global railway and mass transit transportation.

At Tencent Inc., students met Jerry, top executive at Tencent, and learnt the various marketing strategies that were adopted to grow the business locally and globally.

For their visit to Ansaldo STS, Mr Davide Cucino, CEO gave students an indepth presentation into the company and their operations in China. It was a different experience at Nokia China. The students met with six managers, most were MBA graduates from universities outside of China. The manager gave their personal account of working in a multi-national corporation in the highly unique but competitive China market. Besides meeting the representatives, the students were given a tour of the company.

To strengthen the NUS MBA network beyond graduation, students were also introduced to their MBA Alumni in China. They have a great time chatting and reliving their memorable moments at NUS Business School.
