| The NUS Business School – The Business Times CEO Luncheon
|
| |
| The last quarter of 2009 saw the continuing fall of the US dollar. However, the US dollar seems to be strengthening in the early weeks of 2010. Where is the dollar headed? What is its impact on Asian currencies? Is holding the dollar a risky proposition? How should businesses react when facing dollar volatility? Are there structural adjustments that can be made so that the world economy can be more resilient? |

At the NUS Business School–The Business Times CEO Luncheon Series held on 25 Feb 2010, over 50 CEOs and senior executives came together to hear the views of three experts on the currency dilemma.
The panel, which consists of Prof Joseph Cherian, Practice Professor of Finance and Director of Centre for Asset Management Research & Investments (CAMRI) at NUS Business School; Mr Thomas Harr, Senior Foreign Exchange Strategist at Standard Chartered Bank; and Mr David Dredge, Managing Director of Artadis Fund Management, gave their views on the dollar's outlook. The discussion also focused on the future of the euro and the possibility of asset bubbles in booming China. The panel discussion was moderated by Mr Vikram Khanna, Associate Editor of The Business Times.
The guests enjoyed the discussion, especially with the differing but astute points raised by the three speakers. Many found that the opportunity to meet and network with fellow business thought leaders was a valuable one. Mr Kevin Thieneman, President of Caterpillar Asia Pte Ltd and Chairman of Caterpillar India said, “Thank you so much for the invitation. I enjoyed the session and the opportunity to make some new connections.”
The NUS Business School–The Business Times CEO Luncheon Series is part of the year-long series of celebratory events by the School to commemorate its 45 th anniversary in 2010. |

| Mr Sajen Aswani sharing his story and future plans of the Tolaram Group |
|
|
Immersing oneself in the business gives one valuable insight into the industry and experience that cannot be built through studying. This is the reason why Dr Marleen Dieleman, Visiting Fellow from the Department of Strategy & Policy, has been inviting prominent CEOs to speak at her classes.
On 11 Feb, Mr Sajen Aswani, Group CEO of the Tolaram Group, was invited to impart his real-life experience to students at the MBA class on Corporate Strategy. He shared the success story of his family business. |
|
| |
Having started with nothing, his family is currently spread out over different parts of the world, including Southeast Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe, managing a sizable group of business in industries like food, textiles, paper and infrastructure. He talked about his vision and strategy for the coming years. Also present were the Chairman of the Tolaram Group, Mr Mohan, Sajen Aswani's daughter and Caroline Seow, the Executive Director of the Family Business Network Pacific Asia. |

| Making Waves at Regional Case Competitions |

| At the recent Queen’s Entrepreneurs’ Competition (QEC) in Canada on 22 Jan, the BBA students did very well. Team NatureWater comprised of Lai Wai Kit, Joshua Lim, Choo Haiping (Faculty of Engineering) and Jason Lim (Faculty of Science) clinched the G.Bartlett Sustainability Award. They explored the use of a hybrid of technologies to make small-scale desalination system, making it possible for application on board ships. The judges, including the President and CEO of Alliance Data, CEO of LMG, Head of Visa Canada and Vice President of Bedford Capital, were impressed by the innovation, viability and environmental sustainability of their plan. |

Team TimeOrDime.com, which consists of our BBA students, Tseng Ching Tse, Vishesh Mittal and BSc student Calvin Tan, as well as Ting Wei Lin and Ong Chin Leng (Nanyang Technological University), also did well at the QEC. They were the only Asian team to make it to the top six in the competition.
Their plan was to setup a web portal in Singapore that acts as a marketplace for ‘time' and allows people to 'post' and 'run' errands. They intend to expand it to other Asian cities like Hong Kong and Taipei after launching it in Singapore. The official launch of the portal is in March 2010. |

| Triumph Despite Setback |

At the recent Champions Trophy Case Competition organised by University of Auckland Business School, the BBA students demonstrated their determination and dedication once again. Despite having one team member hospitalised on the second day of competition, Team Mohoua Consulting, consisting of Lai Wai Kit, Anderson Quah, Ritchie Goenawan and Jonathan Loh, spurred on and emerged first runner-up. They were also the only Singaporean team in the finals.
This competition showcases the best teams from around the world who have either previously won a competition or have performed consistently in them. Participants were required to develop strategies for several business cases and present them to a panel of judges, all within five hours.
The judges include CEOs and senior management of the respective case companies including Auckland Airport, Ryman (one of the biggest listed companies in New Zealand) and Plunket (a prominent New Zealand NGO).
Dr Kim Chi Wakefield Trinh, from the Department of Strategy & Policy acted as the mentor to the team. |

Bonding through a game of paintball |
|
| |
| On 31 Jan, 28 NUS MBA students participated in a school-sponsored activity that demanded quick decision-making, intense teamwork and thorough execution. No, it was not your usual business case competition or career services workshop, it was something, let's say, more life threatening. It was Paintball – a game where teams would shoot down targets (and of course, each other) with dye-filled gelatinous bullets known as paintballs.
The activity, which was organised by Byun Sang Jin and Roland Lim, both members of the NUS MBA Sports Club, was held at TAG Paintball at Turf City, Singapore. The games started at 12 pm but before that, each participant was asked to accomplish a waiver form to ‘sign his/her life away'. Of course, helmets and vests were provided to ensure safety and to make shooting other people with paintballs less unsettling and more fun! The participants, from the MBA 2008 and 2009 cohorts and the exchange programs, were divided into four teams. Two teams were on the field during each game, and the mission for each team was to shoot down two targets on the opponent's side and then be the first team to bring back an ammo box to home base. All-in-all, seven games were played. The team that won the most games was the one that had the most students from the 2008 cohort. In the end, the paintball activity provided an avenue for teambuilding and camaraderie among the cohort members. Each team had to strategise, work together, and motivate one another to accomplish their mission. Except for a few bruises and scratches, all participants came out alive and had fun. Surely, the activity was a good way to kick off the Student Council's activities for the year. |

Every Chinese family celebrates Chinese Spring Festival, called ‘Chun Jie' in Chinese. ‘Chun' means spring season promising a fruitful year, and ‘Jie' stands for festival. The Chinese New Year celebration at the NUS Business School organised by the NUS MBA Student Council on 9 Feb was a fantastic and enlightening experience. Students from all over the world enjoyed famous Chinese delicacies and watched many colorful performances, such as Lion Dance which is believed to be able to dispel evil and protect people from danger, and also a type of Chinese Opera performance called ‘Huang Mei Xi'.
Participants had a great time welcoming the Chinese New Year with friends and family. There were many greetings of ‘Gong Xi Fa Cai' heard during the revelry, wishing everyone a prosperous and healthy new year ahead.

To add to the festivities, 20 prizes were up for grabs at the lucky draw. There were also 15 prizes for the games. Mr Jing Xiangyang, Welfare Office for the Association, gave away the prize for 'Custom Bingo Card' game. The winner, Ms Hao Yihong donated her winnings of $130 to the Alumni. Overall, all the participants enjoyed themselves thoroughly and were grateful for the opportunity to bond and have fun over lunch.
