Freshman's impressions of Bizad

I live near NUS, and so I walk to school.

When I walked home from school on the first day of orientation, I distinctively remember feeling utterly frazzled. And as I was walking, I had to lug along with me two humongous goodie bags of brochures and freebies from the matriculation fair, I then realized what I had done. I had left my contact at far too many co-curricular activities (CCA) booths at the fair.

I foresee my email inbox getting overloaded with all that tea session invitations. But of course, I then realized that this was after all an unnecessary concern as I accessed my NUS email and IVLE account later on. As compared to the perpetual flood of daily emails from the career service offices and the deans’ office, the numbers of emails detailing tea session invitations were considered nothing!

If you think about it, this perfectly exemplifies the ample opportunities available in the Business School for students to seize, as well as demonstrates the proactive spirit in the administrative staff, which is something that I am honestly thankful for.

As I am initiated into the Bizad community, I begin to uncover more facets of this close-knitted community, such as the contagious enthusiasm of the Bizaders, so evident in this year’s freshmen orientation events like Sentosa games day and Rag & Flag day as we cheered our hearts out and always gave the best that we can in whatever we do. And who could ever forget the seniors, after all the effort they had put into Orientation to welcome my batch of freshmen.

I want to bring up a small personal example through which I would like express my heartfelt thanks to some of the Year 2 seniors. This semester’s modular bidding was highly eventful in my case. The increased intake in this year’s batch of freshmen had resulted in highly competitive bidding in the compulsory Business modules.

To compound matters, I was unfortunately unable to log into the CORS system in the unprotected bidding round 1C, and could not obtain any modules. Yet it was perhaps a blessing in disguise, because I got to witness the warmth of the seniors in lending their hands, without which, I would have probably ended up with only one module this semester. Thank you to those who helped out.

Likewise, I bring special mention to my orientation group, Maayaam, who swept away a good load of Swensens and Settlers vouchers as a result of teamwork and zest, and with whom I bring home shared memories of our sleepovers and mad cheers. “What say I say you say, what say I say you say!”

Now that orientation is over, I am once again reminded of the reason why I had chosen to study Business for the challenge, which is almost tantamount to our university life. As a freshman, university life seems daunting initially because there are so many options offered and a myriad of paths to take. Yet the challenge lies in finding your niche, seizing the day and making the best out of the opportunities offered while learning to be a person.

It sure is one walk to take, and we’ve only just begun. All the best to all freshies!
