| Freshmen's
impressions of Bizad
It has been a month since classes
commenced. Business Leads caught up with a few of them to
talk about their Bizad experience thus far.
“The people are very vocal, very friendly
and easy to mingle with. It is a very comfortable environment,”
said Jana Er.
Jana,
22, is a BBA freshman with an interesting background. Following
her graduation from Singapore Polytechnic, she landed a job
with Merrill Lynch as an in-house trader where she entered
and managed trades in seven Asian stock markets for the Global
Public Clients arm of Merrill.
After a year at Merrill, Jana decided to pursue
a BBA degree in NUS Business School. “The first day
of O-week was a real transition for me, as I had spent the
past year working. The ice-breaking was tough at first, but
after a while I felt there was no longer any barrier to mingle
with the others.”
While it is hard to forge strong friendships
with the independent nature of the modular system, Jana adopts
an open philosophy, “I think we must be flexible to
adapt to the environment instead of the environment adapting
to us.”
Echoing Jana’s impression of Bizaders,
fellow BBA freshman Lek Sze Min, 19, said, “The people
in Biz are a vocal, fun-loving and friendly bunch.”
“Bizad has an entire spectrum of people,
from those who are very hardworking to those who play quite
a bit; each has it’s own strengths,” she added.
Sze
Min also has a colourful history, having been involved in
the Youth Executive Committee for Bukit Timah as well as the
Youth Council. She is currently a panelist for the Young ChangeMakers
scheme and the co-head organizer for programs and operations
for the Social Entrepreneurship Forum 2007.
This young activist has just returned from Korea
where she attended the Youth Camp for Asia’s Future
organized by Korea’s Youth Commission as part of the
Asian Youth Festival involving 18 countries.
Another BBA freshman, Loh Vooi Hon, 21, had
praise for the Bizad seniors, “Some of the year twos
were really helpful. I was working at the start of school
but they helped me in bidding and in orientation.”
The aspiring sailor had this to say however,
“I think Bizad needs to have a little more vibrancy
in order to live up to its ‘happening’ image.”
Like the others, Vani Pande, a freshman in the
MBA programme, is also starting to feel a part of the Bizad
family. “People are so welcoming and cooperative. Here,
nobody imposes themselves on you, you are free to do as you
like,” she said. “They are very friendly; it is
easy to gel with everyone.”
Vani was an executive producer in the entertainment
industry in Bombay for two years when she realized that the
television industry increasingly emphasized professionalism.
It was then she decided to make a shift from the creative
to managerial through obtaining an MBA.
One of the biggest plus points in Vani’s
opinion is the diversity NUS Business School offers, “The
emphasis on diversity in teams, where you have different cultures,
it is great. There is so much cultural exchange.”
While the freshmen interviewed may have differing
impressions of NUS Business School, there seems the general
consensus that Bizaders have done well in welcoming them into
the Biz family.
