I’m pleased to say that our new flagship building – the Mochtar Riady Building – is well on track for completion in April 2009. We’re already in the advanced stage of consultation with COX-DEG architects on Design and Development, including enhancing the form of the building into a “segmented-curve façade”, improving the stacking layout of the office units and classrooms, as well as fine tuning the “pod design” space outside the classrooms to provide spacious open areas for students to study and interact. During this process, focus group sessions comprising students, staff and faculty were conducted to solicit feedback and suggestions. We’re also scheduling for a groundbreaking ceremony and this might take place as early as November this year.
August 25 marked the celebration of our 25th year of the Stanford-NUS Executive Program in International Management. Our partnership with Stanford GSB is a significant one and the fact that it started 25 years ago makes it even more remarkable. It is a reminder to us of the farsightedness NUS and Stanford had, especially in the light of today’s increasing collaborations and tie-ups between business schools across continents. Also, 25 years certainly is a long time and if you look around, there really aren’t many of such kind of partnerships that lasted a quarter of a century.
The celebration consisted of a series of breakfast and lunch talks at Shangri-La Hotel that culminated in a Gala Dinner featuring keynote speaker Prof Jerry Porras, Professor of Organizational Behavior and Change, and Emeritus at Stanford GSB. Jerry is the co-author of bestseller “Build to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies” as well as “Success Built to Last”, his latest book that has also hit the bestseller lists of Wall Street Journal and Business Week. In his keynote address entitled “Beyond the Charismatic Visionary Leader”, Jerry shared about creating a life that matters and about how remarkable men and women found success and meaning in their lives. It was a very well attended event and a nice evening for faculty and staff to catch up with our alumni, friends, corporate partners, participants and guests.
Held annually in Singapore, the Stanford-NUS Program is taught by faculty from both NUS Business School and Stanford GSB and this once again underscores our unique strength of providing the best of east and west in business education. Some 50 senior executives representing 15 countries attended the two-week long program this year.
This is an outstanding program and I look forward to continuing our longstanding partnership with Stanford GSB, so here’s to the next 25 years – and more!

Stanford – NUS Executive Program celebrates 25 years of academic excellence
In celebration of Stanford-NUS Executive Program in International Management’s 25th Anniversary, the Office of Executive Education organized a breakfast seminar and hosted a gala dinner on August 25 at the Shangri-La Hotel Singapore.
At the breakfast seminar, Prof Jerry Porras of Organisational Behaviour and Change, Emeritus, Stanford Graduate School of Business, delivered a topic on "Built to Last: Building a High Performing Company" to over 200 senior executives from over 15 countries.
Prof Porras, a former faculty for the Stanford-NUS Program, is also the co-author of business bestsellers, "Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies" and “Success Built to Last: Creating a Life that Matters”.
In the evening, a gala dinner hosted by Stanford GSB and NUS Business School saw an attendance by Stanford and NUS faculty, corporate partners, business leaders, prominent alumni, as well as current and former participants - some of whom attended the Stanford – NUS Program as far back as 1985. During the dinner, Dr Porras enthralled the audience with his insightful keynote speech on “Beyond the Charismatic Visionary Leader: Creating a Life that Matters”.
Congratulations to Intake 3 of the UCLA - NUS EMBA on their Graduation!
The 3rd intake of the UCLA–NUS Executive MBA program graduated in a warm and intimate ceremony on August 25 at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, Los Angeles, USA. At the ceremony, the brand-new alumni of the two schools presented Teaching Excellence Awards to both Prof Carla Hayn from UCLA and Prof Kulwant Singh from NUS.
Says Mr Patrick Hong, whom the class chose to provide the commencement speech: “The UCLA - NUS EMBA was a journey that involved higher-learning, and also a profound experience that included self-reflection, personal growth, and formation of friendships that will last a lifetime. With my experience in this program, not only do I feel more prepared for the future, I also feel that I have gained an extended family who I can count on wherever I am in the world”. The class also gave a special mention to their fellow participant, Mr Charlie Tay, who had passed away early this year.
The senior executives who came from both sides of the Pacific as well as from Europe devoted six two-week classroom sessions over four powerhouse cities – Los Angeles, Singapore, Shanghai, and Bangalore. Participants put in a lot of hard work in between the sessions in this academically rigorous and intensive program over a period of 15 months.
To find out more about this exciting program, come meet the Academic Directors of the program, Assoc Prof Jochen Wirtz, NUS, and Prof Christopher Erickson, UCLA, at the first 2008 Intake Information Session to be held in Singapore on September 20. NUS-Tsinghua University joint study trip 2007
From August 11 to 16, NUS Business School hosted 20 students from the Finance Association of Tsinghua University as part of the second leg of NUS-THU Joint Study Trip 2007. This study trip was co-organized by NUS Students’ Business Club’s Academic Committee, and Finance Association of Tsinghua University.
During the six-day trip, the students visited five financial institutions, namely Citigroup Regional Service Centre, Franklin Templeton Investment, OCBC, UOB, Bloomberg and Singapore Human Resources Institute (SHRI). The visits comprised presentations by the companies’ where they shared about Singapore’s finance industry and its human resource policies. The visits were also opportunities for the students to build network and rapport for future collaborations.
Apart from academic exchange, cultural immersion was an important aspect of this trip as well. The students from Tsinghua went on a city tour where they visited Sentosa, a Hindu Temple, a Muslim Mosque and ended the day with a shopping trip to Orchard Road and Bugis Street.
Says one Tsinghua delegate: “It was an amazing trip for me as I have come to understand Singapore better as an economic entity. I definitely hope that there would be more of such study trips being facilitated in the future to enrich our students’ undergraduate life!”

Bizad Club claims victory again at annual Rag & Flag
Over 5,000 freshmen and seniors from six Halls of Residence and 11 Faculty Clubs attended the annual NUS Rag and Flag held at the Padang on August 11. Themed Discover our passion, Witness our spirit, this is the first time that the event, which is part of the month-long National Day Festival, was held at a venue outside of campus. The Rag Day, often labeled as the NUS version of Chingay, is a traditional event organized by students to show appreciation to the public for their generous donations during Flag Day, which was held on August 7.
Gracing the occasion were President of Singapore and NUS Chancellor Mr S R Nathan, Minister for Health Mr Khaw Boon Wan, as well as Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, and Second Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.
This year, the Bizad club returned victorious as the Overall Champion and also won the Best Flag Total Collection - NUS President’s Shield and Best Flag Per Capita Collection Shield. This is the 17th year the club has held on to the Flag Shield.
Behind the scenes
Preparation for Rag began eight months ago with recruitment of main committee members, fund-raising, brainstorming of ideas and concepts, sourcing for materials, and setting up of rag-site for the float building process. Rag has traditionally been seen as an initiation for freshmen to welcome and integrate them into the Bizad community. The freshmen’s effort and commitment during the one and a half months of rigorous float-building will get them a sense of attachment to the faculty and ultimately plant the Bizad spirit in them.
This year’s Rag was particularly significant for Bizaders as this was the last year where they built the Rag floats at the Hon Sui Sen Memorial Library Foyer, before relocating to the new Alumni Complex. The Rag-site held fond memories to many of senior students who have helped out in Rag and Flag for many years.
The NUS Rag & Flag Day 2007 was indeed a scintillating showcase of the passion, creativity, ingenuity, imagination and spirit of NUS students.

Back to school... 26 years later
Loud chatters filled the usually quiet NUS museum as 14 BBA alumni from the graduating class of 1981 gathered for a mini reunion on September 23. Hosted by fellow classmate Prof Kulwant Singh, the gathering was organized by the School’s Global Alumni Network Office.
Apart from seeing their old friends, the highlight of the night was a nostalgic walk down memory lane as old photos of the class taken in 1981 were shown in a slide presentation, drawing peels of laughter from the group.
Says alumnus Chan Hung Meng: “It is great to see so many old friends in one go. I look forward to having the rest of the class coming back for a reunion, probably at the NUS Business School.”

Alumna publishes latest book
NUS Business School alumna, Dr Irene Ng who graduated with a PhD (Mgt) in Marketing, has published her latest book “The Pricing & Revenue Management of Services: A Strategic Approach: (Routledge Advances in Management and Business Studies).
Synopsis
In a world of changing lifestyles brought about by new services, technology and e-commerce, this book enters the arena of contemporary research with particular topicality. Integrating both theory and real world practices, Ng advances the latest concepts in pricing and revenue management for services in a language that is useful, prescriptive and yet thought-provoking. The first part of the book discusses the buyer as an individual, presenting the concepts behind what motivates purchase and the role of price within the motivation. The second part discusses the buyer in aggregate, investigating advanced demand, price discrimination and segmentation in service. Ng's aim is to offer a strategic guide to increase revenue in services, drawing from various disciplines, whilst maintaining a strong marketing slant. Grounding the book on actual research in services, Ng is keen to highlight how the concepts and theories of pricing strategy can be combined and applied practically in a way that is easy to read and stimulating. This book will be of much interest to professionals and academics alike, specifically for managers in the service industry and as a text for executive training programs. It would also be a useful supplementary text for students engaged with marketing and revenue and operations management in services.
