The past month was filled with new initiatives and included many victorious moments and celebratory events.

The inaugural session of the NUS Business School - The Business Times CEO Luncheon series was initiated and the focus was The Recovery: Is it for Real? A very apt timing for the discussion, by a distinguished panel of speakers, as the economy is showing signs of recovery.

The School also saw the official launch of the Centre for Social Entrepreneurship & Philanthropy which is intended to advance social entrepreneurship and philanthropy research and education.

Congratulations as well, to our faculty who have been recognised for outstanding research and their efforts in making a difference in the community. We would also like to extend a warm welcome to our new faculty members who have joined us for the new academic year.

Our students have also made us proud as a team of our undergraduates has been awarded 1st runner-up in the Thammasat Undergraduate Business Challenge 2009. We would also like to welcome the new intake of BBA and MBA students, as well as our MBA exchange students and Asia MBA students. We are also pleased that for Rag and Flag 2009, the Bizad Club has once again done us proud for winning the championship and the undergrads have also won several awards for their collection.

We are indeed proud of our staff and students and let us continue to strive for success!

NUS Business School – The Business Times CEO Luncheon Series

(from L to R) The panellists include Dr Chua Hak Bin, Director & Head of Singapore Research, Asia Pacific Equity Research, Citi; Mr Chang Tou Chen, Head of Advisory & Deputy Head of Coverage, Asia-Pacific, HSBC; Prof Bernard Yeung, NUS Business School Dean & Stephen Riady Distinguished Professor and Mr Vikram Khanna, Associate Editor of The Business Times.

Organised by the Corporate Relations and Communications Office, the inaugural NUS Business School –The Business Times CEO Luncheon series was held on 3 September to provide thought leadership to the business community. The distinguished panel of speakers comprised of - an economist, Dr Chua Hak Bin who is the Director and Head of Singapore Research, Asia Pacific Equity Research from Citi; Mr Chang Tou Chen who is a banker and the Head of Advisory and Deputy Head of Coverage, Asia Pacific, HSBC; an academic, Professor Bernard Yeung , NUS Business School Dean and Stephen Riady Distinguished Professor. The discusson was The Recovery: Is it for Real? The panel discussion was moderated by Mr Vikram Khanna who is the Associate Editor of The Business Times.

During the panel discussion, the three panellists shared their insights and perspectives on growing signs that the global economy is on the road of recovery. Dr Chua commented that a post-crisis approach of low income tax, fiscal flexibility and pro-immigration bodes well for Singapore. He felt that as long as exports are not contracting, it is possible for Singapore to achieve a GDP growth of more than 8 per cent next year. As optimistic, Mr Chang also felt bullish on Asia's recovery prospects, as the Asian situation continues to improve in market liquidity, mergers and acquisitions and the capital markets. In contrast, Prof Yeung cautioned that though the global economy is showing initial signs of recovery, the real challenge is when the stimulus measures are withdrawn.

A joint initiative between the NUS Business School and The Business Times, the series aim to serve as a dynamic forum for industry captains and academics to discuss and deliberate on current business issues and is the first in a year-long series of celebratory events by the School to commemorate its 45th anniversary in 2010.

Official Launch of Centre for Social Entrepreneurship & Philanthropy

The Centre for Social Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy (CSEP) was officially launched on 28 August, to advance social entrepreneurship and philanthropy research and education. It also seeks to enhance the community development efforts of the university's students, alumni, staff and other stakeholders.

Over the past year, CSEP has found opportunities for final-year business students to carry out their consulting practicums with social service organizations, social enterprises and co-operative societies. They assisted the organisations in specific areas such as planning and strategizing, branding and marketing, managing their cash flows and many other aspects related to their businesses. The Centre also co-runs a Volunteer Service Management Programme with YMCA Singapore, providing training for managers, executives and volunteers of non-profit organizations in Singapore.

CSEP is also involved in community development, having seed-funded and incubated a couple of web-based student projects to promote public awareness of and interest in social entrepreneurship and philanthropic giving. In addition, the Centre is also working with various student groups to embark on community development expeditions to Vietnam and China.

During the launch, Mr Keith Chua, Co-Trustee of Mrs Lee Choon Guan Trust Fund also presented a generous gift of $1.5 million. This supports the Centre's efforts to engage more students in community development and to build up research in the field of social entrepreneurship and philanthropy.

Breakfast Talk Series - Billions of Entrepreneurs

Organized by NUS Business School Executive Education on 27 August, the breakfast talk is the third in the series and featured Professor Tarun Khanna who was visiting NUS Business School.

Professor Khanna, who is the Jorge Paulo Lemann Professor at the Harvard Business School, spoke to an exclusive group of CEOs, leaders and senior managers, based on his book Billions of Entrepreneurs: How China and India Are Reshaping Their Futures and Yours. Comparing the two rising business powers, and exploring the likely evolution of the Chinese and Indian business models, and their implications to the business world, the talk was particularly relevant at this time when China and India are both taking a much larger role in the global economy.

Guests were able to engage in a lively dialogue with Professor Khanna, and many approached him with questions on entrepreneurship and business models in China, India and other parts of Asia. The session also provided the participants with an opportunity to network and exchange ideas with other industry leaders and managers over breakfast.

MBA Financial Times Ranking Dinner

On 21 August, MBA 2006 alumni made time to meet each other, despite their busy schedules. Together with fellow MBA alumni from other years, they happily relived fond memories of their undergraduate days.

The evening's line up began with a short video showcasing the history of the Business School and its departments, the privileges enjoyed by its graduates, and photographs of the alumni family; followed by the Dean's and Deputy Dean's welcome message. Thereafter, peers and professors reconnected over a scrumptious Indian cuisine. These activities served to update on the school's latest happenings, and also renew the alumni's sense of belonging towards their alma mater.
