| The Next Generation of Life-Cycle Investment Products |
| |
 |
| Professor Zvi Bodie during his public lecture |
|
|
The public lecture - The Next Generation of Life-Cycle Investment Products, jointly organised by the Center for Asset Management Research and Investments (CAMRI) and the Singapore Centre for Applied and Policy Economics was held on 8 December 2009. The event held at NUS Business School was attended by 150 participants who included academicians from the local universities, professionals from the financial industry as well as the general public. Prof Zvi Bodie is a world-renowned and widely published scholar on pension finance, personal finance, investment management, risk management and investment strategy. |
|
The main focus of the talk by Prof Bodie was the pressing need for development of a robust retirement investment product that promises a secure lifetime income which is inflation protected. He was confident that the recent advances in the financial theory, the innovations in the financial market and the availability of leading edge technology makes such a development possible. However, this would require an active involvement of the relevant government bodies and private sector.
Although he mainly addressed life-cycle investment issues currently prevalent in the US market, these are issues that need to be addressed in a developed market such as Singapore as well. It is estimated that by 2030, 20% of the population of Singapore would be above the age of 65 years. Prof Bodie was particularly skeptical about the target-date retirement funds that are extensively used for retirement planning at the moment. According to him, these products transfer the risks from the corporate sector to the consumers and do little to provide investors with a steady stream of income during retirement. He also felt that there is a serious lack of initiative to properly educate the investors regarding the possible risks involved with these investments. Overall, it was a very informative lecture which reminded the audience about the need for smart and educated retirement investment planning. |

| The Ties That Bind |
| |
|
The Corporate Governance and Financial Reporting Centre (CGFRC) and The Business Times (BT) held a roundtable discussion titled "The Ties That Bind" on 7 December 2009 at the Shangri-La Hotel, focusing on related party transactions.
The roundtable discussion was the third in the series of quarterly roundtable discussions organised by CGFRC and BT. Some of the issues discussed at the event were: When do RPTs cross the line from being legitimate to abusive? Do the rules and regulations governing RPTs need to be improved or streamlined? Are the processes for identifying, reviewing and approving RPTs sufficient and robust? How can the monitoring of RPTs be improved? What should be the role of the independent directors in preventing abusive RPTs? What are the challenges faced by auditors in auditing RPTs? What are other governance issues relating to RPTs? What are the red flags that minority shareholders and other stakeholders should watch out for when evaluating RPTs?
A presentation was made by Mr Lee Kha Loon, Head of CFA Institute Centre for Financial Market Integrity, Asia Pacific and the event moderator was Assoc Prof Mak Yuen Teen, Co-Director of CGFRC. Participation at the roundtable was by invitation-only and was attended by independent directors, auditors, legal advisers, investors, regulators, academics and other senior industry professionals. |

Recently one of the School faculty's research findings were featured in the Mizuho Corporate Bank's internal newsletter for their December 2009 issue. The article titled, "Bosses And Their E-Manners: Sex, Emails And Incivility" was based on a research done jointly by Assoc Prof Vivien Lim, Department of Management & Organisation, Assoc Prof Thompson Teo, Department of Decision Sciences and Chin Jen Yuin, a graduate student at the Department of Decision Sciences. This is one example of how the School exchanges knowledge with top industry players.
The relationship between the School and Mizuho Corporate Bank has been ongoing since the MOU signing in July 2008. The MOU outlines potential areas of collaboration between both parties. These may include joint research projects and opportunities for Mizuho to share their expertise with students.
Besides the establishment of endowed Mizuho scholarships and bursaries, the Bank has been working closely with the School to provide top business undergraduates with the opportunity to learn the ropes through internship opportunities at the Bank. |
